Look after the guest

Take the report seriously and privately. If they want to change rooms, offer a room well away from the affected one, and ask them to leave their luggage and clothes sealed in bags rather than unpacking. Moving a guest along with their open luggage is the most common way a hotel turns one room into several.

Take the room out of service

Close it until it has been inspected. Do not strip it and relet it, and do not let housekeeping carry its linen through the building loose; bag it in the room and send it straight to the wash.

Check the neighbours

Bed bugs travel along walls, pipes and wiring. The rooms on either side, above and below are the ones to check next.

How Treatment Is Arranged

An inspection comes first, covering the reported room and its neighbours, so we know how many rooms are really involved. It is the step that stops you paying to treat rooms that are clear, or missing one that is not.

Treatment then goes into the places bed bugs shelter: bed bases, headboards fixed to the wall, the seams of mattresses, upholstered chairs, luggage racks, skirting and the edges of the carpet. A follow-up visit is often needed because eggs hatch after the first treatment, and we tell you at the start whether we expect one.

Helping Housekeeping Spot It Early

Housekeepers see every bed every day, which makes them the best early warning you have. A short briefing on what to look for pays for itself.

• Small dark spots on mattress seams, sheets or the back of the headboard.
• Tiny pale shed skins, or rust-coloured smears on the bottom sheet.
• Live insects in the piping of the mattress or the joints of the bed base.
• A room where a guest has mentioned bites, even in passing.
