Step One: The Inspection

Every visit starts by confirming it is bed bugs and working out how far they have spread. We check the bed, the headboard, the bedside furniture and the edges of the room, then anywhere else in the house where people have been sleeping or sitting for long periods.

Step Two: The Treatment

Treatment goes into the seams, joints, cracks and gaps where bed bugs shelter and lay eggs, not just across open surfaces. That usually means the mattress and bed frame, the headboard and its fixings, the bedside furniture, the skirting and the carpet edges, in each affected room.

Step Three: Aftercare

What you do in the weeks afterwards decides whether the treatment holds. You get specific instructions, and the main points are usually these:

• Keep sleeping in the treated bed unless told otherwise, so any survivors come out across treated surfaces
• Do not wet clean or shampoo treated carpets and floors in the period we give you
• Keep the edges of the room clear
• Tell us if bites carry on beyond the period we describe, rather than waiting to see

Seeing the odd bed bug for a short while afterwards is normal. It is usually one that has come out of hiding and crossed a treated surface.

Step Four: A Follow-Up Where Needed

Bed bug eggs are well protected, and some can hatch after the first treatment. That is why a follow-up visit is common.
