What You Can Do

• Find the source before you buy anything. A spray treats symptoms. Ten minutes looking under the units, behind the bin and at the drain does more.
• Clean drains properly — the film inside the pipe, not just the plughole. A brush and a biological drain product beats bleach, which runs straight past the film.
• Rinse recycling, and do not store it indoors for a fortnight in August.
• Keep bins closed and away from doors, and clean the bin itself occasionally rather than only emptying it.
• Fit fly screens on the windows you actually want open.
• Investigate a smell. If flies appear suddenly at an upstairs window and there is an odour, something has died — and finding it is the whole solution.
