Traps have to be legally compliant, sited where the animals actually travel, set in a tunnel so cats and birds cannot get in, and checked frequently — best practice is at least daily, because no animal should be left in a trap. That repeated attendance is the bulk of the work.
Proofing comes after the roof space is confirmed clear, never before. Sealing a squirrel in leaves it chewing its way out, usually through something expensive.

Why DIY Treatment Often Does Not Solve It
Loft noises are commonly misidentified — rats, mice, birds and bats all get blamed on squirrels and vice versa. Bats and their roosts are legally protected, so nothing should be blocked, trapped or treated until it has been properly identified.
