A great many ant problems start outside, in hard landscaping, and only become indoor problems later. Where a patio, path or driveway meets the house is the single most productive place to look.
Block paving, slabs and concrete paths make close to ideal nesting conditions for the black garden ant: dry underneath, warm because the surface absorbs sun, and completely undisturbed.
The giveaway is the sand. Small heaps of fine material appearing between blocks or at slab joints, usually reappearing within a day of being swept away, is excavated spoil from a colony beneath.
A nest under a patio against the house is inches from the building. Foragers work along the line where the paving meets the wall, find a gap at the threshold, an airbrick or a service entry, and follow it in. The ants you see in the kitchen may be living entirely outdoors.
The other thing worth doing, once the colony is dealt with, is sealing the gap the foragers were using to get indoors. That is usually a five-minute job at a threshold or an airbrick and it is what stops a repeat next summer.
We look at the hard landscaping first: where paving, paths and driveways meet the building, and whether there is fresh spoil in the joints. That is where these colonies usually are.
Treatment is then placed on the routes the foragers are actually using, so that it is carried down into the nest. You get the treatment and the figure before anything is booked.
Our current price is £240 fixed price, guaranteed. There is no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed with you before anything is booked — never afterwards.
Our Ant Control cost guide explains what the price covers and what happens on the day, and every price we charge is published on the pest control price list.
Boiling water and household products deal with what is on the surface of a patio and leave the colony intact underneath. They also wash the jointing sand out, which does the paving no favours and the ants no harm at all.
