What is happening

These are not a different insect. They are the winged males and the new queens of the same black garden ant colonies, leaving together to mate — the nuptial flight. Synchronising it across an area is the point: it gives the queens the best chance of mating with a male from a different colony.

Afterwards the males die within a day or so. The mated queens shed their wings and try to start new colonies, and the overwhelming majority fail.

Winged ants outdoors, or a handful that have come in through an open window, need nothing. It is over in a day or two and there is no infestation to treat.

If the winged ants are emerging from inside the building — from a skirting board, a floor joint, an airbrick or a gap around a pipe — then a mature colony is in the structure rather than in the garden. That is worth dealing with, because a colony large enough to produce a nuptial flight has been established for a while.
