Near the river and around Saint Ives' older core, damp walls and warm voids give ants a reason to stay, and the signs of a settled colony often follow moisture.
Ants look for three things: food, warmth and moisture. Saint Ives, with its riverside setting and older buildings in the town centre, often supplies all three in the same place. That helps explain why established colonies there often reveal themselves around damp or warm parts of a building.
If a line of ants goes to a sink, a shower tray, a leaking pipe or a damp corner and not just to food, it suggests the colony values that spot. Check:
In older properties, soft or crumbling mortar, gaps beneath flagstones and voids under suspended floors can house a nest. The signs are ants coming and going from the same crack, fine debris or grit collecting below a gap, and trails that disappear into the wall and reappear a few feet along.
Gardens close to the river can have damp, loose soil that is easy to dig. Look for small mounds along the edge of a patio or at the foot of a boundary wall, ants working along the top of a garden wall, or a steady stream between a border and a door.
An outdoor garden ant colony sleeps through the cold. Indoor activity in winter, especially in a warm damp room like a utility or bathroom, means the nest is in or beside a heated area.
Winged ants emerging from inside on a humid day show the colony has matured in or next to the structure. Increasing numbers week on week do the same.
Sprays and powders on the visible ants only remove workers, and a colony in a damp wall will carry on regardless. Pouring water or bleach into cracks does not reach the queen either.
We trace the route, identify the ants and apply treatment where workers will carry it back to the nest. Ant control in Saint Ives is £240 fixed, with no call-out fee, and anything that comes back within 14 days is re-treated free. The Saint Ives ant control page and cost guide explain more, and a pest inspection and survey at £120 is useful where damp and ants overlap.
Saint Ives has a number of older riverside and town-centre buildings where the original floors, walls and drains have been altered over many years. That gives ants plenty of hidden routes, so a trail that vanishes into a wall is worth noting down.
