If ants have suddenly appeared in your March kitchen, an outdoor colony has most likely found food and sent workers in along a scent trail from a gap nearby.
The honest answer is that the ants are not new. The colony has been there for a while, probably in the ground close to the house, and something has recently made your kitchen worth the trip. Warmth, a spill or a slightly open door is often enough.
An ant that finds food does not carry it home and forget. It returns along a path laid with scent, and each worker that follows adds to it. A route used by one ant at breakfast can carry dozens by lunchtime. This is why the arrival of ants in a March kitchen can feel like it happened between one cup of tea and the next.
March has older terraced streets near the railway and newer estates around the edges, and the entry routes differ.
Fenland soil is generally flat and open, but a colony does not need much: the base of a wall, under a flag, or a warm corner of a bed is enough.
A tidy kitchen is harder for ants to exploit, and sometimes that is the end of it. If they are still arriving after a fortnight, the colony is still fed and growing, and wiping or spraying will not change that.
We find the activity, identify the species and apply a treatment that is carried back to the nest. Ant control in March is £240, fixed, with no call-out fee, and the price is agreed before we start. All treatments are guaranteed, with a free re-treat if ants return within 14 days. Read the ant control cost guide for more, or book a pest inspection and survey for £120 if you are unsure what you have.
It is tempting to block the entry gap with filler the moment you find it. Doing so before treatment can leave some ants inside the house or send the rest to another route. In a March terrace, with party walls and neighbours on both sides, the new route can be a few feet away. Treat first, seal afterwards.
