How Quickly Can a Rat Infestation Be Cleared in Cambridge?

People understandably want a date. The honest answer is that nobody can give an exact one before seeing the property, and anyone who promises a rat problem gone after one visit is guessing. What we can do is explain the stages, roughly how they unfold, and what shortens them.

Why It Is Not a One-Visit Job

Rats are neophobic, which means wary of new objects. When something appears on a route they have used every night, they tend to avoid it at first and investigate it later. That caution is what has kept the species alive around people for a very long time, and it applies to traps and bait stations as much as anything else.

So the first part of any treatment is simply waiting for the rats to accept what has been placed. Only once they are feeding or passing through it does the treatment start to work on the population as a whole.

The Stages, in Order

• Survey. We find where the rats are active, how they are getting in and where they are coming from. Treatment is placed on the routes on the same visit where that is appropriate.
• Acceptance. The rats get used to what is on their path. You may notice little change at first, and that is expected.
• Reduction. Activity falls. Noises ease, fresh droppings become fewer and runs stop looking used.
• Follow-up. We return to check what has been taken, top up or move treatment, and look for remaining activity.
• Confirmation. We confirm activity has stopped before signing off, rather than assuming it from a quiet week.
• Proofing. Once the property is clear, the routes in can be sealed.

What Makes It Quicker

The biggest factor you control is competition. A rat with plenty of other food has little reason to take anything new. Cutting off the alternatives makes the treatment the easiest meal on the route.

• Stop putting out bird food until the job is finished, and clear up spilled seed.
• Move pet food, poultry feed and seed into sealed, hard containers.
• Keep bins shut and take cooked food out of the compost.
• Leave bait stations and traps exactly where they were placed. Moving them resets the rats' caution.
• Tell us promptly about new noises, droppings or damage, so we can adjust the treatment.

What Makes It Slower

Some situations take longer, and it is better to know that at the start.

• A drain defect feeding new rats in. Treatment clears what is inside, but a broken pipe keeps supplying more until it is repaired.
• Neighbouring properties with untreated activity. Rats move along terraces and between gardens.
• Large outdoor populations under decking, sheds or in compost that keep topping up activity indoors.
• Previous DIY attempts. Rats that have had a bad experience with a trap or bait can be more cautious the second time.
• Plentiful food nearby, including feeding by other households.
