Why Bed Bugs Are Hard to Treat Yourself

A bed bug spends almost all of its life hidden. It comes out to feed on a sleeping person, then goes back into a seam, a joint, a screw hole or a crack a few millimetres wide. Its eggs are glued into those same crevices.

Household products work on contact. They kill the bed bugs they touch, and the ones you can see are the ones you touch. The rest of the population, and all of the eggs, sit a short distance away untouched. The biology and behaviour of bed bugs explains why their habits make them so good at this.

What Home Measures Actually Do

Worth doing

• Hot washing and tumble drying bedding and clothes from the affected room. Heat kills bed bugs and eggs in fabric, and it costs almost nothing
• Vacuuming the mattress seams, the bed frame and the edge of the carpet, then sealing the bag or emptying the cylinder into a bag outside
• Decluttering around the bed, so there are fewer places to hide and fewer places to miss
• Mattress encasements, once a treatment is under way, so anything left in the mattress is sealed in and easy to spot on the outside

Not worth doing

• Aerosol sprays kill what they hit and little else. Some leave a residue that can make bed bugs move away from a treated area rather than through it
• Foggers and "bug bombs" settle on open surfaces, not in crevices. They can scatter bed bugs into the next room
• Throwing out the mattress leaves the frame, headboard and skirting untouched, and carrying it out can shed insects on the way
• Sleeping elsewhere usually spreads the problem to wherever you move

What Steam and Heat Can and Cannot Do

Steam gets asked about more than anything else. Applied slowly and directly into a seam, it can kill bed bugs and eggs where it reaches. The trouble is the word "reaches". It does not penetrate a bed frame joint, the space behind a skirting board or the inside of a divan base, and moving too quickly over a surface leaves everything underneath alive.

So steam is a useful tool in the right hands, but it is not a whole treatment on its own. The same goes for bags of clothes left in a hot car or a cold shed: temperatures there are too uneven to rely on.

When to Stop and Ring

Ring when any of these is true:

• You have found a live bed bug, shed skins or dark spotting on the mattress or frame
• Bites have continued for more than a week or two despite washing and vacuuming
• More than one person in the house is being bitten, or bites have started in a second room
• You live in a flat or a shared house, where the problem may not stop at your door
