Why Older Houses Give Moths More Places to Hide

Clothes moth larvae want a sheltered, undisturbed spot with fibre to eat. An older house tends to offer more of those than a new one:

• Gaps between floorboards, which fill over the years with fluff, hair and fibre — food that sits out of reach of a vacuum
• Fitted carpets laid over old boards, so larvae can move between the pile and the gaps below
• Deep skirting and uneven edges, where the carpet never quite meets the wall
• Built-in cupboards, window seats and alcoves used for storing blankets and clothes
• Larger lofts and cellars with more room for stored textiles
• Old bird nests in roof spaces and chimneys, which can support scavenging moths and beetles

None of this means an older house will have moths. It means that when it does, they can be in more places, and a treatment that only covers the obvious carpet can miss them.

Older homes often hold older textiles — rugs, tapestries, quilts, uniforms, furs, upholstered antiques — and these are frequently wool, silk or hair, stored for long periods, and irreplaceable.

• Photograph valuable items before and after, for your own records
• Keep valuable textiles clean, rolled or boxed in acid-free materials, and checked regularly

What Treatment Involves in an Older Property

We start by working out where the larvae actually are: along edges, under furniture, in floor gaps where carpet has lifted, inside fitted cupboards and in stored textiles. Treatment then goes into those places — the edges and junctions, the harbourage, and emptied storage — rather than across the open floor.

Before starting, we tell you what is being used, where, when the rooms can be used again and what to do with pets. Please follow those instructions; if you have concerns about an animal, speak to your vet. Where we think valuable items need a specialist instead, we say so.

After the Treatment

• Leave treated carpet and edges alone for the period we give — no vacuuming or steam cleaning
• Then vacuum edges and under furniture regularly, using the crevice tool along the boards
• Where carpet has lifted from old boards, consider having it re-fitted so the edge is closed
• Go through fitted cupboards and window seats a few times a year
• Store blankets and clothing clean and sealed
