Clearing an Infestation Is Achievable

An established carpet moth population can be ended. It takes three things done together: every feeding site found and treated, every affected textile washed, frozen, cleaned or discarded, and the aftercare followed — including leaving treated carpet alone for the time we give.

When those three happen, the larvae that were feeding are dealt with, the eggs and larvae hiding in clothes and stored items are gone, and there is nothing left to restart the cycle. That is what we mean by clearing it.

Why Moths Seem to Come Back

When moths reappear a few months after a treatment, it is usually one of these rather than bad luck:

• A reservoir was missed. A box of jumpers in the loft, a rug in the spare room, a wool throw on the back of a chair. The main rooms were cleared; the population was not.
• Eggs hatched after the treatment. Eggs and larvae deep in protected places can survive a first treatment. This is the reason for the aftercare and, where we expect it, a follow-up.
• The carpet was cleaned too soon. Vacuuming, shampooing or steam cleaning before the period we give lifts the treatment back out of the pile.
• Cleaned clothes went back too early, or into a wardrobe that had not been treated.
• It is a different insect. A garden moth at the light, a store-cupboard moth in the kitchen, or carpet beetle where there was moth before.

Where New Moths Come From

Even with the house cleared, new moths can be introduced. The commonest routes are things brought in — second-hand furniture, rugs and clothing, vintage pieces, boxes from a relative's home. Carpet beetle adults can also fly in through an open window in warm weather. Old bird nests in the loft or eaves can support scavenging moths and beetles that then work their way indoors.

The Habits That Keep Them Away

• Vacuum the edges of rooms and under furniture regularly, not just the open floor
• Move furniture a few times a year so the carpet beneath is disturbed
• Clean wool clothing before putting it away, and store it sealed
• Take stored textiles out, shake and air them every few months
• Check second-hand and handed-down items before they go into a room
• Keep a pheromone trap in the worst-affected room as an early warning
• Look in the spare room, under the beds and behind the doors every few months
