Is There a Moth Season?

Sort of, but not in the way most people hope. Adult clothes moths are most noticeable from late spring through to early autumn, when warmer rooms speed up their development and more of them are on the wing at once. That is when people tend to see them and call.

The adults, though, are the least important part. They live for a few weeks, do not feed on fabric, and exist to mate and lay eggs. The larvae are the ones eating, and they are present — out of sight, in the pile and the dark corners — for far longer than the adults.

A quiet month for moths is not a quiet month for larvae.

Why Winter Does Not Stop Them

Outdoors, cold slows insects down. Indoors, central heating keeps a house warm enough for clothes moth larvae to keep feeding and developing through the winter, just more slowly than in summer. How long the full life cycle takes depends on temperature and food, and it can stretch over many months.

So the pattern many households describe — a few moths in summer, nothing seen over winter, more damage and more moths the following year — is not the problem coming and going. It is the same population, growing between the times you notice it.

When to Act

The right time is when you find evidence of larvae, whatever the month. Signs that mean it is time:

• Bare or thin patches along skirting or under furniture
• Small cases, silk webbing or gritty frass in the pile
• Holes appearing in wool clothes that were fine last time you wore them
• Small, plain, gold-buff moths that scuttle rather than fly, seen repeatedly in the same room
• A pheromone trap that keeps catching

Does the Time of Year Change the Treatment?

Not really. We treat where the larvae are, and they are in the same places in December as in June. What the season can change is what you see afterwards: in warm months, adults that were already developing may still emerge for a while after a treatment, and seeing a few is not necessarily a sign it has failed. Look for fresh larvae, cases or grazing instead.
