The Loft, the Spare Room and the Box Nobody Opens

Larvae need natural fibre, darkness and a long spell without disturbance. Stored textiles offer all three for months at a time. A bag of winter jumpers in the loft, a suitcase of old blankets under the spare bed, a box of a relative's clothes kept for sentimental reasons — each of these can hold a population that grows quietly, and then sends adult moths out into the rest of the house.

By the time damage appears in a bedroom carpet, the stored source may have been active for a long time. Treating the bedroom without finding it means the moths keep coming.

The moths you find in the bedroom may have been born in the loft.

Checking What You Have Stored

Set aside an afternoon and go through every store of textiles in the house.

• Loft. Bags and boxes of clothing, bedding, curtains, rugs and soft toys. Also look at any old bird nests near the eaves, which can feed scavenging moths and beetles.
• Spare room. Under the bed, the wardrobe, the chest of drawers, and anything stacked against the walls.
• Under-stairs and airing cupboards. Wool blankets, throws and spare duvets with feather filling.
• Garage and outbuildings. Dust sheets, old coats, camping blankets and anything upholstered.
• Keepsakes. Wedding dresses, christening gowns, uniforms, knitted items, furs and hats.

Look for holes, bare patches, silk, small cases and gritty debris at the bottom of the bag or box. Our carpet moth identification guide shows what each of these looks like.

What to Do With What You Find

Take affected items out of the house or into a sealed bag straight away, so they are not shedding eggs as you carry them. Then deal with each one: hot wash where the fabric allows, freezing in a sealed bag for delicate or unwashable things, dry-cleaning for tailoring, and specialist cleaning for anything valuable or fragile.

Do not put cleaned items back into the same box or bag. Cardboard, in particular, is easy for larvae to shelter in and hard to clean — throw it out.

Storing Textiles So They Stay Clear

• Wash or dry-clean everything before it goes into storage
• Use lidded plastic boxes or strong sealed bags, not cardboard or open shelves
• Label what is inside, so you can check it without unpacking everything
• Take stored items out once or twice a year, shake them and look them over
• Keep storage off the floor of the loft where you can, away from old insulation debris and nests
• Put a pheromone trap near the stored items as an early warning
