Carpet Moth Treatments in Yaxley

We cover Yaxley for carpet moth and carpet beetle treatment, priced at £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room. If you have no idea how they got in, the answer is usually something you brought into the house.

Carpet Moth Treatment in Yaxley

Yaxley is a village just south of Peterborough, and it is covered by our standard service at the standard price. There is no call-out fee, and we confirm the room count and the total before booking. The Peterborough carpet moth page covers the local service, and the main carpet moth and carpet beetle control page covers how we work.

How Moths Get Into a House

People are often puzzled by an infestation in a clean, well-kept home. Cleanliness helps, but it does not stop moths arriving. Clothes and carpet moths are poor fliers, so they rarely come in from the garden on their own. They are carried in.

  • Second-hand and vintage items. Wool coats, rugs, upholstered chairs, cushions and blankets from charity shops, auctions, markets and online sellers.
  • Inherited and handed-down textiles. Boxes from a relative's home, often after years in storage.
  • Furniture moved between homes. An old sofa or a chest of drawers can carry larvae in the joints and underneath.
  • Moving house. A previous occupant's infestation in the carpets, or your own belongings bringing one with them.
  • Open windows, for carpet beetles. Unlike clothes moths, adult carpet beetles fly well and can come in from outdoors in warm weather.

Checking Second-Hand and Inherited Items

The simplest rule is that nothing made of natural fibre goes straight into a wardrobe, drawer or room until it has been checked and, if there is any doubt, cleaned.

  • Unpack in a hard-floored room or outside, not on a carpet
  • Look at seams, folds, collars, cuffs and the undersides of rugs and cushions for holes, silk, cases or grit
  • Wash hot, freeze in a sealed bag, or dry-clean anything woollen before it is used or put away
  • Turn upholstered furniture over and look at the underside and the joints
  • Throw away the boxes and bags things arrived in

Our carpet moth identification guide shows what to look for, and explains how to tell moth from carpet beetle.

Quarantine before you unpack. A few days sealed in a bag, followed by a check and a clean, costs nothing and stops most new infestations before they start.

Moving Into a House With Moths

If you have just moved in and found moths or damage, the source may be the carpets you inherited with the house, particularly in rooms that were empty for a while before the sale. Check the edges and the carpet where furniture used to stand, and the inside of any fitted wardrobes.

It is much easier to deal with carpets and fitted storage before your own things are unpacked into them. If you can, have the affected rooms treated first, and hold off putting wool clothes into built-in wardrobes until afterwards. If you are unsure whether anything is there at all, a pest inspection and survey is £120 fixed cost and tells you what is present and where.

Treatment and Price

We treat the affected rooms where the larvae feed: edges, under furniture, inside emptied storage and the gaps where they shelter. We tell you what we are using, where, when rooms can be used again and what to do with pets before we begin. Follow those instructions, and check with your vet if you have any concerns about a pet.

Treating one room costs £220; each additional room is £60 more, so three rooms is £340. The carpet moth treatment cost guide explains the rest. Every treatment is guaranteed: if the problem comes back within 14 days of treatment, we return and re-treat free of charge.

If moths reappear months later, it is usually a new introduction rather than the old infestation — our post on whether you can permanently get rid of carpet moths covers how to stop that.

Carpet Moth Treatments in Yaxley — Common Questions

Do you cover Yaxley?
Yes. Yaxley is covered at the same price as Cambridge and Peterborough, with no call-out fee.
Can moths come in through an open window?
Clothes moths rarely do, as they are weak fliers. Adult carpet beetles fly well and often come in from outside in warm weather.
Is a charity shop jumper a risk?
It can be, if it was stored or donated with eggs in it. Washing it hot or freezing it before you wear or store it removes the risk.
We have just moved in. Is it the previous owner's problem?
Practically, the carpets are yours now, so the priority is getting them treated before your own things are exposed. Any question of responsibility is a matter for your conveyancer.
How long should I quarantine second-hand items?
Keep them sealed until you can check and clean them. Freezing for around two weeks, or a hot wash where the fabric allows, deals with eggs and larvae.
