In Duxford, where cottages and newer houses sit side by side, a short written log of where and when ants appear is the quickest way to tell a colony from a visit.
The clearest sign of an established ant infestation is repetition. One ant, or even a dozen on a hot day, may be a visit. The same ants in the same place for several days, or coming back after you have dealt with them, mean a colony is behind it. A week of simple notes will show you which you have.
Each day, write down four things:
By day four or five the picture is usually obvious. A scattered pattern suggests scouts. A fixed line at fixed times suggests a colony with a settled route.
| What you wrote down | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Different spots each day, few ants | Scouts looking for food |
| Same spot, same line, daily | Established trail from a nearby nest |
| Back within days of spraying | Colony untouched |
| Ants in the coldest months | Nest in a warm part of the building |
Duxford has old cottages with solid walls, flint or brick plinths and uneven floors, and it has newer houses on the edge of the village with tidy patios and sealed kitchens. In the older houses, trails tend to emerge from the base of a wall or a gap beside a flagstone floor. In the newer ones they more often come from the door threshold, a pipe collar or the paving outside. The log works equally well in both, because the route is the evidence.
Clearing crumbs matters, but it does not touch the queen or the brood, and an established colony will search wider until it finds something else. Treatment has to reach the nest through the workers.
Ant control in Duxford is £240 fixed, with no call-out fee, and the price is confirmed before any work begins. If ants return within 14 days we re-treat at no charge. The Duxford ant control page and the cost guide explain what is included. If you would rather have the entry points and species checked first, a pest inspection and survey costs £120.
Duxford homes close to open ground and the airfield side of the village have plenty of soft earth around them. The log still tells you the same thing: a fixed route is a colony.
