Ants that arrive in a Duxford kitchen without warning have normally found a new food source, with the colony itself hidden outdoors or in the fabric of the building.
It helps to ask what has changed, because something nearly always has. Either the weather warmed, the colony grew, or something in the kitchen became easier to reach. In Duxford homes, which range from old cottages to modern houses, the reasons vary but the pattern is the same.
Black garden ants speed up as the ground warms. A few days of heat can turn a quiet colony into one sending out hundreds of foragers.
A dropped spoon of sugar, an open honey jar, a bowl of pet food left down overnight. Ants find it quickly and tell the others.
If a patio has been lifted, a border dug or a shed moved, the colony underneath may have been disturbed and relocated closer to the house.
Cracked pointing, a new pipe run, or a door that no longer closes tightly can open a route that was not there last year.
In an older Duxford cottage, ants often use gaps in solid-floor edges and old brickwork. In a newer house, look at the base of external walls and where patios meet the building. Either way, the route is often a lot smaller than you would expect.
These steps make the kitchen less appealing and can end a minor visit. They cannot reach a queen. If the ants return in the same place within a couple of weeks, the colony is still active.
Our ant treatment is £240 fixed, with no call-out fee, and we confirm the price before booking. Workers carry the product back to the nest, and if ants return within 14 days we re-treat for free. Our cost guide explains the details, and if you are unsure what you have, a pest inspection and survey is £120.
Waiting until autumn does work in a limited sense, because foraging drops away as the weather cools. The colony does not go anywhere, though, and it tends to return the following spring in the same Duxford kitchen, often with a larger workforce and a route it already knows.
