Wasp Nest Removal — Buckden

Wasps, Bees or Hornets? Identification Advice for Buckden Property Owners

Telling a wasp from a bee or a hornet comes down to body shape, flight and where the insects are going, and Buckden's older buildings give plenty of places to watch.

You can usually tell a wasp, a bee and a hornet apart in under a minute, from a safe distance, if you know which three things to look at: the body, the way it flies and where it goes. Here is the short version for Buckden property owners, before you decide whether you need anyone out.

What Buckden's older buildings change

In the old village core, brick walls, gable ends and roof spaces with small gaps are exactly where a colony of anything tends to settle. The trick is not to peer into the gap. Stand back, pick a warm still moment and watch the traffic. A steady two-way stream into a single hole, with smooth yellow-and-black insects, points to wasps.

Do not block the hole. Wasps that cannot get back in will chew at the surrounding material looking for another way, and from a cavity that can end up inside the room. Leave the entrance alone until it has gone quiet.

When it is not a wasp

  • A fuzzy golden insect entering a wall in numbers may be honey bees. That is generally a job for a beekeeper, and we would tell you so rather than treat them.
  • A fat, furry insect going in and out of a bird box or the base of a hedge is a bumblebee. There are usually only a few going in and out, and they die back by autumn.
  • A very large insect with a reddish-brown body is worth a photograph from a distance and a call.

What DIY can and cannot do

A shop-bought spray can knock down wasps you can see. It does not reach a colony inside a wall, and it is risky at a first-floor gable. Identification you can do yourself, and it costs nothing. The treatment is the part to leave alone.

A worked example from an old village house

Say you notice a handful of insects disappearing under the edge of a tiled roof on a brick Buckden house. Stand across the road, count how many go in over two minutes, and note whether they are smooth and sharply marked or soft and furry. Ten smooth insects in two minutes, all using the same gap, is a nest. Two or three furry ones, wandering rather than darting, is much more likely bumblebees passing through. Write the numbers down and tell us when you ring, because it saves a visit being spent on guesswork. Buckden's older properties also tend to have more than one possible gap, so note which one.

Common Questions

Can I tell wasps from bees from a photo?
Often yes. A clear photo of the body shape and the nest entrance is usually enough, and sending one on WhatsApp is a good start.
Are bumblebees in my Buckden garden a problem?
Rarely. A small colony in a bird box or under a shed is usually harmless and finishes by autumn, so there is normally nothing to treat.
Is a hornet more dangerous than a wasp?
Not automatically. Hornets are bigger and a sting is painful, but they are not generally more aggressive. Keep your distance and tell us what you see.
Will you treat honey bees?
Honey bees are generally a job for a beekeeper rather than a pest treatment. We will tell you plainly if that is what you have.
