Insects entering an old Duxford wall or chimney are as likely to be honey bees as wasps, and the difference decides who you ring and what happens next.
If insects are flying in and out of a wall, chimney or roofline in Duxford, do not assume they are wasps. Cottages with old brick, lime mortar and gaps under the eaves attract honey bees as well, and the right response is very different for each.
A wasp is smooth, hairless and sharply banded black and yellow, with a narrow waist. A honey bee is a softer golden-brown, a little fuzzy and less strongly marked. From a metre or two away, wasps look like they have been drawn with a marker pen and bees look slightly dusty.
Honey bee colonies in a building can stay through the winter and build wax comb and honey inside the void. A wasp nest is annual and the colony dies off in autumn.
If the activity is in a bare patch of lawn or a sandy bank rather than in the building, you may have solitary mining bees. Each female digs her own small hole and leaves a tiny volcano of soil. They are not a colony, they do not defend a nest, and they are gone within a few weeks. Leave them alone.
Do not fill a hole with foam or filler while insects are still using it. With wasps, that pushes them to find another route, which can come out into the room. With bees, it can trap a colony and its honey inside the wall.
Older houses in Duxford have chimney stacks, lime-pointed brick and eaves with gaps that suit nesting insects. Newer houses nearby tend to have soffits and vents. In both, track where the insects land before they go in. If the wall is warm in the afternoon sun and the traffic is heavy, that is a busy colony, not a stray. Take a short video from a distance for a beekeeper or for us, which saves time. If the insects are honey bees, do not seal the wall in a hurry, because the comb and honey inside will still be there.
