What Should You Do If You Find an Active Wasp Nest in Saint Ives?

Before deciding what to do about an active wasp nest in Saint Ives, check that it really is a nest and not wasps drawn to food, because the responses differ.

Plenty of wasps in a garden does not always mean a nest in it. In Saint Ives, with riverside gardens, café terraces and tight streets near the old centre, wasps can travel some distance for food. So the best first step is to work out which problem you have.

Foragers or a Nest?

  • Foragers: wasps arriving at a drink, a bin or fallen fruit, hovering for a while, then flying off in different directions.
  • A nest: a steady two-way traffic through one small gap or hole, wasps flying a consistent line, in and out all day.

If you are seeing the first, the answer is tidying up rather than treatment. If you are seeing the second, the nest is active and needs dealing with.

If It Is Foragers

  1. Keep bins closed and rinse recycling.
  2. Clear fallen fruit and cover sweet drinks and food outdoors.
  3. Do not swat. Move away slowly if one lands on you.
  4. Watch where they come from. If several leave in the same direction, that is a clue to where the nest might be.

If It Is a Nest

Stay well back from the entrance. Do not block it, spray it or knock it down. Keep windows closed on that side and pets and children away. Older buildings in the town centre and along the river have lots of gaps: chimney stacks, lead flashings, eaves, old brickwork and timber outbuildings. Riverside gardens add sheds, boathouses, hedges and banks. A nest can be anywhere from a loft to a hollow in a bank.

Watching from a distance. Stand ten metres away or watch from a window in the middle of a warm day. Follow the wasps heading home, not the ones leaving, and note the point where they all converge. Please do not get a closer look.

Bees and Hornets

Check you really have wasps. Honey bees should not be treated, and a beekeeper is the right call. Bumblebees are docile and best left alone. If you are not sure what you are looking at, describe it to us or send a photo. A pest inspection and survey is £120 if you want the whole property looked at, details at our inspection page.

Treatment

For a wasp nest we apply an insecticidal dust at the entrance, which the wasps carry into the colony. It calms down over a day or two. The Saint Ives price is £90 fixed, with no call-out fee and confirmed before booking; see the Saint Ives service page and cost guide.

Evening and Early Morning

If you run an outdoor space in Saint Ives, such as a riverside café table or a pub garden, a nest that is quiet at dawn can be very busy by lunchtime. Watching at different times of day will show you whether the traffic is steady, which is a good sign that it is a nest.

Common Questions

How do I tell wasps at my table from a nest?
Wasps at food come and go in all directions. A nest shows as a steady stream through one small opening.
Will tidying up get rid of a nest?
No. It reduces foraging wasps around bins and tables, but a colony in a wall or roof carries on.
Are the insects in a hole in my wall wasps?
Not necessarily. Small solitary bees also use holes in mortar. Send us a photo or description and we will tell you.
Do you treat riverside sheds and outbuildings?
Yes. Nests in sheds, boathouses and banks are treated for the same fixed £90.
