What the Law Expects of You

Food businesses have a legal duty to keep pests out. That duty sits with the business, not with the landlord, the pest controller or the building next door. It applies to restaurants, cafés, takeaways, pubs, shops, care settings, staff canteens and any premises where food is prepared, stored or sold.

In practice, the question an environmental health officer asks is not whether you have ever had a pest. It is what you did when you found out. A business that can show it acted promptly, recorded what it found, and followed the advice it was given is in a very different position from one that sprayed a can and hoped.

The First Hour After a Sighting

• Do not spray. An aerosol scatters them further into the building and makes the source harder to find
• Photograph the insect if you can, or keep a dead one in a sealed bag. It tells us which species we are dealing with
• Check stock near where it was seen. Open packaging close to the sighting may need to be discarded
• Tell the person responsible for food safety on shift, and make sure the sighting is logged

None of this needs you to close. Whether you should stop using part of the premises depends on what is found, and that is a judgement for the business, informed by what the inspection shows.

Why Businesses Get Cockroaches

It is rarely about cleanliness alone. Commercial premises offer the three things cockroaches need, warmth, moisture and shelter, in quantities no house can match: commercial fridges and dishwashers with warm motors, hot-water pipe runs, deep fryers, stacked cardboard, and voids behind fitted equipment that nobody opens.

They also arrive. Deliveries in cardboard outers, second-hand catering equipment and shared ducting in a parade of units all bring them in. A business in a building with other occupiers can do everything right and still inherit a problem from next door, which is why the route in matters as much as the treatment.

A visit to business premises follows the same logic as any cockroach job, with more emphasis on evidence and on the building's shared parts.

• Identifying the species, because German and Oriental cockroaches live in different places and need different handling
• Finding where they are living, which is usually inside or behind equipment rather than where staff saw them
• Treating those living areas in a way that fits around food handling
• Looking at deliveries, drains, ducting and neighbouring units as possible routes in
• Written notes of what was found, what was done and what you need to do next
• Clear instructions for staff before and after treatment

How Business Work Is Priced

Business premises are quoted per site. A single café kitchen and a multi-unit food production site are not the same job, so we do not publish a commercial figure. We look at what you have, tell you what the work involves, and confirm the price in writing before anything is booked. There is no call-out fee.

Keeping Them Out Once They Have Gone

• Break down delivery cardboard at the door and get it out of the building the same shift
• Pull out and clean behind fixed equipment on a schedule, not only when something is seen
• Fix dripping taps, condensation and leaking seals. Dry premises are far less attractive
• Seal gaps where pipes and cables pass through walls and into ceiling voids
• Keep a simple sightings log where staff can reach it
