It is also the pest on our list where we would most strongly encourage you to ring the same day rather than think about it over the weekend, and it is worth explaining why rather than just asserting it.

Why Speed Matters More Here

Cockroaches reproduce quickly. The German cockroach — the one most often found in kitchens — carries its egg case around with it until shortly before it hatches, which means the eggs are protected by the adult rather than left somewhere they might fail. It is an efficient arrangement and it is why populations build fast.

They also move. In a flat, a terrace or a building with shared service ducts, cockroaches travel along pipe runs and cavities between properties. A problem left for a month is frequently no longer only your problem, and it becomes considerably harder to resolve once it is in the structure rather than in one kitchen.

Nothing else on our price list gets meaningfully worse in a fortnight. This does.

Which One Have You Got?

Two species account for most UK infestations, and telling them apart is genuinely useful because it tells you where to look.

Where They Hide

• Behind and underneath the fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, especially near the motor where it is warm
• Inside the voids behind and under kitchen units
• Around pipework and under sinks
• Behind kick boards and in the gap between units and the wall
• In cardboard packaging and storage boxes
• In cellars, ducts and drains — particularly for Oriental cockroaches
• Around external drain covers, gullies and under steps

Cockroaches are nocturnal and avoid light, so seeing one in the day usually means there are considerably more than one. So does a distinctive musty smell in an enclosed space, or small dark specks like ground pepper along the edges of cupboards.

What the Treatment Involves

1. Identification. Species and extent, because they change where we treat and what we use.
2. Finding the harbourage. Not where you saw one, but where they are living and breeding — which is nearly always somewhere you cannot see.
3. Treatment of the harbourage rather than the open surfaces.
4. Attention to the route in, especially where drains or a neighbouring property are involved.
5. Follow-up where needed, which we tell you about in advance.
6. Advice on what stops it recurring — usually a small number of specific and practical things.

Do Not Spray Them First

This is the single most useful thing we can tell you before we arrive.

A supermarket aerosol kills the cockroaches it hits and disperses the rest deeper into the structure. That makes them harder to find, harder to reach, and it can spread a problem that was confined to one kitchen into the rooms next to it. Some products also leave a repellent residue that reduces the effectiveness of what we would use next.

If you have already sprayed, that is not a disaster and it is not a criticism — but please tell us, because it changes our approach.

If You Run a Food Business

A cockroach problem in a food business is a food safety matter as well as a pest control one, and the responsibility for dealing with it sits with the business.

• Act the same day, and be able to show that you did
• Keep a written record — what was found, where, when, who you called and what was done
• Do not wait to see whether it gets worse. With cockroaches it will
• Expect the route in to be examined, because deliveries, packaging and shared ducting are common sources
• Tell staff what to report and to whom

What You Can Do

• Clear and clean behind and under appliances, which is where the warmth and the food debris both are
• Fix leaks and dry up standing water. They need moisture
• Break down and remove cardboard rather than storing it — corrugated card is close to ideal harbourage
• Store food in sealed containers, including pet food
• Seal gaps around pipework and behind kick boards
• Check second-hand appliances before bringing them in, particularly around the motor housing
