UK house spiders are harmless. They do not damage the building, they do not contaminate food, and they are genuinely useful — they eat flies, mosquitoes and other insects. There is no UK spider that presents a serious danger to a person in a domestic setting.

And the thing that prompts most calls is seasonal. From late summer into autumn, mature male house spiders leave their webs and wander in search of females. That is why you suddenly see large spiders crossing the floor in the evening, and why they seem to appear from nowhere in September. It is not an infestation and it is not caused by cold weather. It passes.

If what you are seeing is a handful of large spiders in early autumn, the honest answer is that it will resolve itself in a few weeks.

When Treatment Is Genuinely Worth It

There are real situations where it is, and this is what the £220 is for.

• Persistent high numbers that are not seasonal and do not settle down — usually a sign of an abundant insect food supply
• Heavy webbing in a commercial or storage setting. In warehouses, production areas and food premises, webbing is a housekeeping and audit problem, and removing it repeatedly by hand is more expensive than treating
• Cellars, outbuildings and garages where webbing accumulates faster than anyone wants to deal with it
• A genuine phobia. If somebody in the household is affected badly enough that it changes how they use their own home, that is a real problem and it is a legitimate reason to treat. We will not pretend otherwise
• False widows in a sensitive setting — around a child's bedroom, or a workplace where people are handling stored goods

False Widows, Accurately

Worth a straight answer, because they attract a great deal of exaggeration.

False widow spiders are established across much of southern England, including Cambridgeshire. They are the only UK spiders whose bite is worth discussing at all. Bites are uncommon — they are not aggressive and will generally retreat — and where they do occur the usual result is localised pain and swelling.

They are not black widows, they are not deadly, and the newspaper coverage they get every autumn is out of proportion to the risk. If you think you have them and would rather not, that is a perfectly reasonable basis for a treatment. Panic is not necessary.

What the Treatment Involves

1. Identification, which matters where false widows are the concern
2. Removal of webbing, which is a genuine part of the job rather than tidying — it removes egg sacs as well
3. Treatment of harbourage and entry points rather than open floors — spiders sit in corners, along frames, behind stored items and at the tops of walls
4. Attention to the outside, around door and window frames, air bricks, and under eaves
5. Advice on the food supply, which is what actually decides how many spiders a building supports

What Works Better Than a Treatment, Long Term

Spiders are there because there is food. Reduce the insects and the spider population follows, and that is more durable than anything applied to a wall.

• Deal with the outside lighting. A bright white light by a door brings in the insects that spiders eat. Warmer-toned lighting, or a light positioned away from the door, makes a noticeable difference
• Remove webs regularly, including egg sacs, indoors and around external frames. A long-handled brush and ten minutes a month does a lot
• Seal gaps around window and door frames, and fit brush strips where there is a gap under an external door
• Cut back planting that touches the walls and windows
• Keep cellars and garages tidier, since stored boxes are ideal harbourage
• Move the bins away from doorways, which reduces the flies
