In an Ely terrace the nest you cannot find may be under a neighbour's yard, which is one more reason removing a nest without treating the colony rarely works.
Almost never, and in a terrace the reasons stack up. Even if you could dig out a nest, you would have to find it first, and in the older streets of Ely the nest feeding your kitchen can be under a shared yard, beneath a neighbour's patio or in a party wall you do not own.
Victorian and older terraces share their foundations, yards and drainage runs. Garden ants follow warmth and food, and a colony near the boundary can send workers into two or three houses at once. You can wipe out the ones in your kitchen and the colony will carry on feeding next door's too.
Old brick pointing, lime mortar and crumbling yard surfaces give ants plenty of space to tunnel. Lifting a flagstone may reveal a nest, but you will not know whether it is the only one, and in a narrow yard you are disturbing it close to your own back door. Disturbed ants relocate, and the problem can end up in a worse place.
This approach does not require anybody to locate the nest, and it works whether the colony is in your yard or next door's. Our Ely ant control page has the detail.
If the neighbours are also affected, ask them to leave their trails alone for the first few days of treatment too. A well-meant spray on their side can interrupt the process on yours.
Ant control in Ely is a fixed £240, with no call-out fee and the price confirmed before booking. The ant control cost guide covers what is included. If ants come back within 14 days, we return and re-treat free.
We cannot control a colony in a neighbouring house we have no access to. What we can do is treat the workers who enter yours, and in most cases that takes the colony down regardless of where it sits. Occasionally a second colony in a neighbouring property will send new foragers later in the season, and a follow-up visit is simply a new job.
If you are unsure whether it is ants at all, a pest inspection and survey costs £120 and identifies the pest and how it is getting in.
Ely's mix of terraces, older cottages and newer infill means no two streets are quite the same, and what is true for a house on a corner plot is not always true for one in the middle of a row. A short description and a photo when you ring help us to judge which you have.
