When ants suddenly fill an Ely kitchen, the cause is usually a shared route in a terrace or old wall, a warm spell, and one scout that found food.
A single ant on the worktop is a scout. If it finds something good, it lays a chemical trail on the way back, and the workers behind it follow and strengthen the route. By the time you notice, a line has formed. That is the reason ants seem to arrive in an Ely kitchen within hours.
Ely has a lot of Victorian and older terraced housing, with solid walls, party walls and ground-level air bricks. Ants take advantage of all of it:
None of this means your house is dirty. It means the building has many small openings, and ants need very little.
| Time of year | What is happening | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Early spring | Colony wakes, brood is reared | A few ants near an outside wall |
| Late spring to summer | Peak foraging | Established trails, larger numbers |
| Warm, humid summer day | Winged ants leave to mate | Flying ants across the area |
| Winter | Outdoor colony dormant | Nothing, unless the nest is indoors |
Vinegar, lemon, chalk lines and shop sprays can interrupt a trail for a day or two. They do not reach the colony. When the ants reappear, usually on a slightly different route, people assume the problem is getting worse when it is simply unchanged.
Our Ely ant control is £240, fixed, with no call-out fee and the price confirmed before you book. The treatment is carried back to the nest by the workers themselves, and we guarantee it: if ants return within 14 days, we re-treat free. The cost guide covers the details, and a pest inspection and survey at £120 is available if you want the cause identified first.
It saves time to know three things: roughly when the ants first appeared, where in the kitchen you see most of them, and whether any have wings. If you share a wall with next door in your Ely street, mention that too, as it tells us where to look for the nest and which entry points are worth checking.
