In Ely's terraces and older houses, the room where ants turn up tells you a lot about whether the colony is outdoors, in a shared wall or somewhere warm inside.
Established ant infestations leave different evidence depending on the room. A trail in the kitchen suggests one thing, ants in a bathroom another. In Ely, with its Victorian and older terraces, shared walls and small back yards, it helps to look room by room.
This is where most people notice them first. An established colony shows up as a line running from a fixed gap, typically the back door, a skirting board or the pipe run under the sink, to food, the bin or the pet bowl. If the line is there every day, the colony has decided your kitchen is worth the trip.
Ants are drawn to water as well as food. Activity around a bath panel, a toilet pipe or the washing machine often means the trail comes through a gap where pipes pass through the wall or floor. It can also mean a nest in a damp or warm void beneath.
Ants away from the kitchen are a sign of a larger or older colony. They may be tracing sweet crumbs or simply following a route along skirting boards and window frames. Winged ants appearing from a skirting board or floor edge are the clearest sign that a colony has been growing inside the structure.
In a terrace, a nest may be in the next-door garden while the trail comes into your house through the party wall or the floor void. That does not make the problem less real for you. A treatment aimed at the point where they enter and the trail they use can still work, and it is worth mentioning to the neighbour if you know they have seen ants as well.
If a shop spray appeared to work and the ants were back within a week, you almost certainly have the whole colony still intact. The spray kills workers on contact and does nothing to the queen.
We follow the trail, confirm what species it is and apply the treatment where the workers will carry it back to the nest. The price of ant control in Ely is £240 fixed, confirmed before we begin, and we re-treat free if ants come back within 14 days. See the Ely ant control page and the ant control cost guide for the details, or book a pest inspection and survey for £120 if the source is unclear.
In Ely, back yards are often small and paved, so there is little soil to hide a nest. If you see ants but no soil, look to gaps in the yard wall, drain edges and the foot of the house.
