In a Buckden home the answer is nearly always found by following the trail, noting where it crosses the wall, and leaving it unwiped while you watch.
You find where ants are coming from by following them, not by killing them. In a Buckden house the line on the worktop is the end of a trail, and the trail leads back to a gap in the wall and a nest outside, usually within a few metres of that gap.
A worker that finds food lays a scent trail on the way home, and others follow it. That is why ants walk in a tidy line, and it is also why the line is useful to you. Watch one for ten minutes with a torch if the light is poor. Ants going towards the food are empty-handed, and the line leads back to wherever the colony is.
Buckden has an old village core, and older cottages have things newer houses do not: soft lime pointing, worn mortar joints, a stone or brick plinth with gaps at the base, and door thresholds that have settled over many years. Ants need very little. A line of ants going into a crack beside a back door, or into the angle where a lean-to meets the main wall, is a common sight in houses of that age.
Look outside along the same line. Black garden ants usually nest in soil, so check the border against the wall, the gap between flagstones, the base of a garden wall and anywhere under a path. A small heap of fine soil grains pushed up between paving stones is a good sign. If ants are active in the house in the middle of winter, the nest is more likely to be somewhere permanently warm inside, such as near a boiler or behind an appliance.
You can usually establish the route in and which side of the house the activity comes from. You often cannot confirm where the queen is, because she is deep in the nest and may be under a slab or inside a cavity. Pouring boiling water or powder onto the visible entrance tends to shift the trail a few feet along rather than end it.
Many Buckden properties sit behind brick or stone boundary walls with borders against them. Those borders are warm in the afternoon, which is exactly what a colony wants. If the trail you found leads to a back door, walk the outside of that wall for a couple of metres either way and look at the soil at its foot.
