In Buckden's older cottages and village houses, an established ant colony shows itself through trails that never change route, ants in winter and tiny heaps of soil by the walls.
A handful of ants on a warm afternoon is not an infestation. An established one has a few clear marks: the same trail used day after day, activity that comes back within days of spraying, and a nest somewhere close to the building. In Buckden, where many homes have older walls, worn pointing and flagged paths, those marks tend to show up in particular places.
Foraging ants lay a scent trail and follow it again and again. If you can point to the exact skirting board, door threshold or window frame they use, and it is the same one this week as last week, the colony has found a reliable way in and is sending workers through it on purpose.
Black garden ants nest in the ground and often dig beside walls and under paths. Look for these outside:
Older stone and brick can have gaps that a newer house would not, so a trail running into the wall of a village cottage is worth taking seriously.
Workers heading in the direction of the nest while carrying small pale objects are moving eggs or pupae. That tells you there is brood nearby, which means a working colony and not a scouting party.
Winged ants flying over the garden on a humid summer day are a general event and tell you little about your house. Winged ants coming out of a skirting board, airbrick or floor gap inside are different: they were reared in the structure.
Garden ant colonies are mostly dormant in winter. Ants on a kitchen worktop in January point to a nest in a warm spot such as behind an appliance, near a boiler or along a heating pipe.
Shop sprays kill the ants you can see and leave the colony alone. It sends fewer workers for a few days and then carries on. If you have sprayed and the trail has returned, you are probably dealing with an established colony and not a passing visit.
A professional treatment is put where the ants walk, so the workers carry it back to the nest. Ant control in Buckden is a fixed £240 with no call-out fee, and it is guaranteed: if the ants return within 14 days, we come back and re-treat free. Details of what is covered are on the Buckden ant control page and in the ant control cost guide. If you want the species and the entry points confirmed first, a pest inspection and survey is £120.
Buckden homes near the old village core often have a long history of small repairs, and ants find the seams between them. If yours is one, tell us roughly how old the wall is when you call.
If you recognise these signs, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the trail and we will tell you what we think is going on.
Tell us what you have found and where. We confirm the treatment and the price before anything is booked.
