Ants that seem to arrive overnight in a Buckden kitchen are usually workers from an outdoor colony that has just found something worth following home.
Ants rarely turn up in a kitchen by chance. In most Buckden homes the answer is that one worker found something sweet or greasy, went home, and laid a scent trail that every other worker then followed. The sudden part is the trail, not the colony, which has usually been nearby for a long time.
A colony of black garden ants spends the cold months mostly dormant. When the ground warms, the queen starts laying again and the workers range further to feed the brood. A kitchen that was out of range in March can be well within it by May.
Within an hour or two a single scout becomes a visible line. That is why it feels like an invasion that started from nothing.
Buckden has a village core of older cottages and brick houses beside newer infill, and the way ants get in differs between them. In older properties it is often worn pointing, gaps around pipe entries, or a threshold that no longer sits tight. In newer ones it tends to be the joint between a patio and the wall, or a gap behind a kitchen plinth.
Follow the trail backwards if you can. Where it disappears under a door, behind a skirting board or into a crack tells you a good deal about where the nest is.
All of this is worth doing. None of it deals with the colony, so if the ants keep coming back along the same route after a week or two, the nest is still there.
An outdoor colony is dormant in winter. If you see ants in a Buckden kitchen in January, the nest is probably indoors somewhere permanently warm, such as behind an appliance or near a boiler. Tell us that when you call, because it changes where we look.
We follow the activity, identify the ants, and apply a treatment that workers carry back to the colony. Ant control is £240 fixed price, with no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed before we book. If the problem returns within 14 days, we come back and re-treat free. The ant control cost guide sets out what the price covers.
Spraying a trail often makes the ants split into several smaller lines, and people then think the problem has multiplied. It has not. The same workers are simply searching for another way round the barrier, and in a Buckden cottage with several possible gaps they usually find one within a day.
Not sure it is ants, or where they are getting in? A pest inspection and survey is £120. To talk it through, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the trail.
Tell us what you have found and where. We confirm the treatment and the price before anything is booked.
