In a Cambourne house or flat, the quickest way to tell whether you have bed bugs is to inspect in rings around the bed and photograph what you find.
Inspect in rings. Start with the bed itself, then the furniture touching or next to it, then the walls and floor around it, and only after that the rest of the house. Bed bugs go where they can reach a sleeping person without travelling far, so the inner ring holds most of the evidence, and you can stop widening the search once it comes up empty.
Cambourne is mostly modern housing, built from the late 1990s onwards, with plain walls, fitted carpets and a good number of rented homes and flats. That means fewer gaps in the structure than an old cottage has, but bed frames, headboards and upholstered furniture offer exactly the same hiding places as anywhere else.
Look for ink-like dark spots, pale shed skins, tiny pale eggs and flat reddish-brown insects roughly the size of an apple pip. A single spot is not proof, but spots plus skins in the same place usually is. Bites on their own cannot be relied on, because reactions vary so much.
If your Cambourne home is rented, tell the landlord or agent promptly and in writing, with your photographs. Bed bugs can pass between neighbouring properties in a block, so do not try to sort it out quietly with sprays. DIY products often scatter the insects rather than clear them, which makes the later inspection harder.
A fixed-price pest inspection and survey costs £120 and tells you what the pest is and how far it has spread. If it is bed bugs, our Cambourne bed bug service is £220 for the first room and £80 for each extra room, with no call-out fee. The cost guide sets out exactly what that covers.
A neat, modern room is quicker to inspect but does not rule bed bugs out, since they have nothing to do with cleanliness. Many Cambourne homes have built-in wardrobes and storage beds, so open every drawer and lift every lid near the bed. Storage divans in particular have a lot of seams and staples where bugs and spotting can sit unseen.
