If a piece of second-hand furniture came into your Huntingdon home recently, inspect that before anything else, then the bed it stands closest to.
Start with whatever came into the house most recently, especially anything second-hand, and then check the bed nearest to it. Bed bugs rarely appear from nowhere. They arrive on furniture, luggage and clothing, so the newest addition is a sensible first suspect, though not a certain one.
Huntingdon mixes Georgian and older properties with a great deal of post-war housing, and plenty of homes there are furnished partly with inherited, charity-shop or online marketplace pieces. Good value, but upholstered items and bed frames deserve a proper look before they come indoors, and a second look if bites start afterwards.
The signs are ink-like dark spotting, pale papery shed skins, tiny pale eggs, and flat oval reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple pip. Spotting plus skins together in the same crevice is far more convincing than a single mark. Some marks are just dirt, fabric dye or a squashed spider, so look for the pattern.
Hot washing bedding and vacuuming along edges can reduce what you see, but they will not reach bugs sheltering inside frames and furniture. A product sprayed on a visible bug leaves the hidden ones untouched, and many people find activity returns.
Note which item you suspect, when it arrived and where you found marks. A pest inspection and survey is £120 fixed, and it confirms the pest and its extent. Treatment through our Huntingdon bed bug service is £220 for the first room and £80 for each extra, confirmed before we begin. The cost guide explains it fully.
Beyond furniture, think about anything else that arrived lately: a returned item, a borrowed bag, or bedding from a relative. Huntingdon has a busy market-town rhythm of visiting and swapping, and some of that stuff ends up in bedrooms. Inspect it before it settles there. Items stored in a bag or box for months can still carry bugs, because they survive long gaps between meals.
