Bed Bug Control — March

Why Can Bed Bugs Return After DIY Treatment in March?

In March, bed bugs usually return after DIY treatment because well-meant reactions such as swapping rooms or binning the mattress spread the problem and leave the real harbourage untouched.

Most of the bed bug problems that come back in March are made worse by what people do in the first few days. The instincts are sensible, but they work against you, and they are a big part of why DIY treatment fails.

None of these reactions are foolish. They are what most people in March would do at two in the morning with fresh bites, and the fix is simply knowing in advance which of them to skip.

Three Instincts That Backfire

Moving to the spare room

Bed bugs orient towards a sleeping person. If you move, they follow, and you can end up with two infested rooms instead of one. Staying in the same bed feels wrong, but it keeps the job small.

Throwing out the mattress

Bed bugs are rarely only in the mattress. They are in the frame, the headboard, the slats and the furniture nearby. Carrying a mattress through the house can shed bugs on the way, and you will still have the infestation. You will also have bought a new mattress.

Spraying everything

A heavy hand with a spray may make bugs scatter and does nothing for eggs, which are stuck into crevices and hatch later. Some bugs also tolerate common consumer insecticides.

The result looks like a return. A few quiet weeks, then bites in a different room. In fact, the bugs never went; they were moved.

Terraces and Newer Estates

March has older terraces near the railway and newer estates on the edges of the town. In terraced streets, bugs can occasionally pass between connected homes, so ask whether next door has noticed anything. In newer homes, the cause is far more likely to be luggage or second-hand furniture. Either way, the cleanliness of the house is irrelevant, as bed bugs feed on blood, not dirt.

What Does Help

  1. Hot wash bedding and clothes, then tumble dry hot, and keep them bagged afterwards.
  2. Leave the bed where it is and keep sleeping in it.
  3. Reduce clutter around the bed so the frame can be checked.
  4. Use a torch on the mattress seams, frame joints and headboard.
  5. Stop using DIY products until you know what you are dealing with.

The Fixed-Price Route

Our bed bug control in March costs £220 for the first room and £80 for each additional room. There is no call-out fee and nothing is added after the quote. If you want the facts first, a pest inspection and survey is £120. You can read how it all adds up in the bed bug treatment cost guide.

Because eggs can mean a follow-up visit, we say beforehand if we expect one. A return within 14 days is re-treated free. Call 01223 902388 or WhatsApp us if you would like to ask something first.

Common Questions

Should I sleep in another room until it is treated?
No. Bed bugs tend to follow a sleeper, so moving can spread them. Stay in the same bed until treatment.
Is it worth buying a new mattress?
Not before treatment. The bugs are usually in the frame and furniture as well, so a new mattress can be infested again.
Could the bugs be coming from next door?
In terraced or connected homes it is possible, so it is worth asking neighbours. We can help work out the pattern.
Why did bites start again in a different room?
Disturbed bugs spread. Moving rooms or heavy spraying can send them to other places, which looks like a return.
