The test
Look for webbing. The Natural History Museum describes carpet beetle damage as “small, clean holes which are not accompanied by strands of silk webbing”. Moth larvae leave silken webbing and fine debris in the pile; beetle larvae do not. Webbing present means moth. Clean holes with no webbing means beetle.

The shed skins are worth knowing about. Beetle larvae moult repeatedly, and the discarded bristly skins are often more visible than the larvae themselves — sometimes they are the only thing you find.
