Half the properties we attend for “carpet moths” turn out to have carpet beetles. There is a simple test that separates them, and it takes ten seconds.
Both damage the same materials in the same places, and our treatment and price cover both — so you do not need to know before you call us. But it is worth being able to tell, because carpet beetles are far more often missed.
BPCA go further than that: they say carpet beetle larvae have outstripped the clothes moths as the major British textile pest. Almost every article you will read on the subject talks only about moths.
| Carpet moth | Carpet beetle | |
|---|---|---|
| Damage | Grazed patches, with silken webbing | Small clean holes, no webbing |
| The larva | Pale and grub-like, often in a silken case | The “woolly bear” — about 4mm, covered in brown hairs |
| The adult | Small, drab, a poor flier, keeps low | 2 to 4mm, like a small mottled brown, grey and cream ladybird |
| Where you find the adult | Near the floor, in dark corners | Often on windowsills, trying to get out |
| Also leaves | Fine debris in the pile | Powdery droppings and shed larval skins |
The shed skins are worth knowing about. Beetle larvae moult repeatedly, and the discarded bristly skins are often more visible than the larvae themselves — sometimes they are the only thing you find.
We identify whether it is moths, beetles or both, because the evidence differs and knowing which tells us where to concentrate.
Treatment covers both and is placed where the larvae feed. The treatment and the cost are set out before we book you in.
Our current price is £220 first room, +£60 per additional room. There is no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed with you before anything is booked — never afterwards.
Our Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control cost guide explains what the price covers and what happens on the day, and every price we charge is published on the pest control price list.
A shop-bought moth product aimed at a carpet beetle problem is a common and understandable mistake — and it is why so many people believe they have treated the problem twice already before they call anybody.
