Signs You May Need Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control in Cambourne

  • Threadbare or irregular bare patches in carpets
  • Small clean holes in wool clothing, blankets or rugs
  • Larvae, silken cases or webbing around carpet edges
  • Damage beneath furniture and along skirting boards
  • Small moths keeping low in a room, or small mottled beetles at windows
Not sure what you are dealing with? A pest inspection and survey is £120 fixed cost and identifies the pest, the extent and the access points before you commit to a treatment.

Moths or Carpet Beetles? The Webbing Test

Both damage the same materials in the same places, and our treatment and price cover both — so you do not need to know before you call us. But it is worth being able to tell, because carpet beetles are far more often missed.

BPCA go further than that: they say carpet beetle larvae have outstripped the clothes moths as the major British textile pest. Almost every article you will read on the subject talks only about moths.

The test

Look for webbing. The Natural History Museum describes carpet beetle damage as “small, clean holes which are not accompanied by strands of silk webbing”. Moth larvae leave silken webbing and fine debris in the pile; beetle larvae do not. Webbing present means moth. Clean holes with no webbing means beetle.
Carpet mothCarpet beetle
DamageGrazed patches, with silken webbingSmall clean holes, no webbing
The larvaPale and grub-like, often in a silken caseThe “woolly bear” — about 4mm, covered in brown hairs
The adultSmall, drab, a poor flier, keeps low2 to 4mm, like a small mottled brown, grey and cream ladybird
Where you find the adultNear the floor, in dark cornersOften on windowsills, trying to get out
Also leavesFine debris in the pilePowdery droppings and shed larval skins

The shed skins are worth knowing about. Beetle larvae moult repeatedly, and the discarded bristly skins are often more visible than the larvae themselves — sometimes they are the only thing you find.
