In a larger Great Shelford family house, carpet moths often show up first in a spare room or wardrobe, so it helps to know the signs in both carpets and clothes.
Carpet moth is identified by small grazed patches with silk webbing, pale grub-like larvae or little fibre cases, and small drab moths that stay low. In a bigger family house, the first sign is often not on the main floor at all. It is a hole in a jumper, a thin patch on a spare-room carpet or a throw that has been stored for the summer.
Great Shelford has many larger homes with a spare bedroom, a box room, a study and a good deal of storage. Larvae favour undisturbed spaces with plenty of keratin, so check these first:
Moth larvae chew irregular holes in wool, and they often leave webbing or tiny cases on the item. Holes in clothes that have been put away unwashed are the classic pattern. Carpet beetle damage can look similar but tends to be small, clean holes with no silk. Both feed on keratin, so natural fibres are at risk and cotton and linen are not.
Sprays and traps for moths will not reach larvae feeding in the underlay or at the back of a wardrobe. A strip that catches adult moths tells you something is there, but it does not stop damage that larvae are already doing.
Our Great Shelford carpet moth and carpet beetle control is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, a fixed price agreed before we start. For a rounder view, see the price guide.
Run your fingers along the edge of the room where carpet meets skirting, then under the nearest sofa. If the pile feels thin, gritty or tangled with fine threads there, but not in the middle of the room, larvae are the likely cause. Photograph it before you vacuum, so you have a record.
If you see small moths in a bedroom, they are worth noting but not worth chasing. Clothes and carpet moths mate and lay eggs rather than feed, so one sighting means eggs may be in the carpet or a wardrobe. Look for larvae and damage in the same room before deciding what to do.
