Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control — Buckden

Why Do Carpet Moths Often Appear Under Furniture in Buckden Homes?

In older Buckden homes the heaviest furniture sits in the same spot for years, and that undisturbed patch of floor is exactly where carpet moth larvae choose to feed.

Carpet moths appear under furniture because that is where nobody walks, vacuums or moves anything. The larvae do the damage, they prefer to feed undisturbed, and the floor beneath a dresser, wardrobe or settee gives them days, months and sometimes years of peace.

The Buckden Cottage Pattern

Buckden has plenty of older houses near the village core, and many of them still have the original arrangement: a solid dresser against one wall, a wardrobe that came with the house, a wool rug laid over boards. Furniture like that is heavy, so it is cleaned around rather than under. Over the years the space beneath collects hair, lint and fibre, which is a useful food supply for a larva that eats keratin.

What They Are Actually Eating

  • Wool carpet and wool-mix carpet, including the strip that runs under the furniture
  • Wool rugs, throws and blankets stored or laid nearby
  • Felt or wool underlay beneath a carpet that looks synthetic
  • Hair, feathers, fur and the dried bodies of other insects

The adult moths you may see in the room do not eat fabric. Their job is to lay eggs, and they tend to do it somewhere dark and still.

The moth is not the culprit. By the time you notice a small moth running along the skirting, eggs have usually already been laid in the pile. Swatting adults will not save the carpet.

Signs to Look for Beneath the Furniture

  1. Pull the piece a few inches clear of the wall, or tip back the edge of the rug.
  2. Look at the pile against the skirting and at the underside of the rug for thinned or bare patches.
  3. Check for silken webbing, fine gritty debris, or small cases shaped like grains of rice that the larva drags around.
  4. Look for clean round holes with no webbing, which points to carpet beetle rather than moth.

What You Can Do Yourself

Move what you can and vacuum thoroughly along the edges and beneath the furniture, then empty the vacuum outside. Wash or freeze small woollen items that can take it. This removes larvae and debris and is genuinely worth doing.

What it does not do is reach everything. In a Buckden home with a wardrobe that cannot be shifted by one person, a tight dresser or a rug that has not been lifted in years, some larvae are left behind, and the pattern simply returns. Off-the-shelf sprays and hanging strips mostly catch adults and do little for larvae deep in the pile.

What We Do and What It Costs

We find where the larvae are feeding, treat those areas, and confirm the work and the price before booking. Carpet moth and carpet beetle control costs £220 for the first room and £60 for each extra one, with no call-out fee. See the Buckden service page or the cost guide. If the problem returns within 14 days, we come back and re-treat free. If you are unsure what you have, a pest inspection and survey is £120.

If you would rather talk it through, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the edge of the carpet. We will tell you honestly whether it looks like moth, beetle or something else.

Common Questions

Why do I only find damage where the dresser stands?
Larvae feed where they are not disturbed, and furniture that never moves protects them. Damage tends to start there and at the edges of the room, then spread.
Can I just lift the rug and wash it?
Washing or freezing a small wool rug can help if it suits the material, but the floor and underlay beneath it also need checking. Otherwise the rug can be re-infested.
Are the moths in my Buckden cottage coming from outside?
Clothes and carpet moths are usually already in the building or arrive on textiles. Carpet beetles are more likely to fly in through windows.
Is a hanging moth strip enough?
No. Strips target adults. The larvae in the carpet do the damage and are not affected much by them.
