Duxford has old cottages and newer family houses side by side, and in both, carpet moth larvae are most often found beneath furniture that is rarely moved.
Carpet moth larvae feed in places that are dark, quiet and left alone. Under a sofa, a bed or a bookcase fits that description exactly, which is why it is so often where damage is first spotted.
Most people say carpet moth when they mean either of two different insects. The carpet moth leaves silken webbing and grazed patches. The carpet beetle larva, a short, brown, bristly grub, leaves small clean holes with no webbing at all, plus shed skins and gritty droppings.
The difference shapes how they arrive. Moths are usually already in the building or are carried in on textiles. Beetle adults feed on pollen and often fly in through open windows, so a Duxford house with a garden and an open window in summer can pick them up with no second-hand furniture involved.
In an older Duxford cottage the culprit is often a wool rug over boards, or a stored blanket chest. In a newer house, it is more likely to be fitted carpet with a felt underlay running beneath the beds. The pest is the same; the food source differs, and so does the best place to look.
Moving furniture, vacuuming the floor and the edges, and washing wool items are all worthwhile. Deal with the loft or window recesses too, since dead insects in them are food.
What a vacuum cannot do is remove larvae wedged in the pile or underlay. Sprays from a shop will not reach them either. If the damage keeps spreading, the larvae are still feeding.
Treatment from our Duxford carpet moth service is £220 for the first room and £60 for each additional room, confirmed before we start. We guarantee it: if they return within 14 days, we re-treat free. The cost guide has the detail.
Set aside twenty minutes with a torch. Work round one room at a time, looking along the skirting, behind the largest pieces and inside the lowest cupboards. In a Duxford cottage with thick walls and deep window recesses, look inside the recesses too, since dead insects collect there and the larvae will feed on them. Note what you find in each room before deciding whether one room or several need treating.
If you would rather talk it through, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the edge of the carpet. We will tell you honestly whether it looks like moth, beetle or something else.
