Found an active wasp nest in March? How quickly it needs treatment depends on where it is, how close it is to people and what time of year it is.
Any active nest should be left alone and treated, but not every one needs treating this afternoon. In March, where terraces near the railway sit alongside newer estates and plenty of gardens run out towards open Fenland, the real question is how close the nest is to the people who live there.
| Situation | How soon to act |
|---|---|
| Wasps getting into the house, or entrance beside a door or window | As soon as you can. Ring today |
| Entrance on a path, washing line or play area | Within a day or so, and keep people away meanwhile |
| Large, busy nest in the roof or wall with no wasps indoors | Soon. It will not get smaller |
| Small nest at the far end of the garden, well away from use | Arrange treatment when convenient and keep clear |
Be careful with the last row. A nest that looks harmless in June can hold many more wasps by late summer, and the nest tends to be most defensive then.
As the season goes on, the workers have fewer grubs to feed and start looking for sugar elsewhere. That is when they begin bothering people at bins, fallen fruit and outdoor tables. The colony dies out anyway with the cold weather, but that can be a long way off, and a big nest in the wrong place is not something to wait out.
If you rent, tell the landlord or agent and say the nest is active. For a shared roof or a terrace, a quick word with the neighbours helps, as the nest may belong to a different property from the one where wasps are coming in.
A technician finds the entrance and applies an insecticidal dust there. Wasps carry it into the colony and it quietens over a day or two. The cost is £90 fixed, with no call-out fee, and is confirmed before booking. See the March service page or the cost guide for more.
Open ground around March means a stiff breeze is common, and wind can scatter wasps across a wider area than you would expect. Even if the nest is at the far side of the garden, a washing line, a bird table or a back door downwind can end up in their path.
