When wasps keep flying into a March roof, most people try to stop them with a can, a block or a flame, and each of those tends to make things worse.
Wasps flying repeatedly into the same part of a roof are going to a nest. What you do next matters a good deal, and the common instincts are mostly the wrong ones. In March, where there are older terraces and newer estates side by side, the same mistakes come up in both.
This is the commonest one. It seems logical: close the gap and the problem ends. The nest, though, is on the other side. Wasps that cannot get back the way they came will chew at the surrounding material looking for another route, and in a roof the new route sometimes comes out on the inside of the building, in a ceiling, around a light fitting or beside a wall.
It also stops the treatment from working. The method depends on the wasps being able to get in and carry the dust to the colony.
A shop-bought aerosol reaches a metre or two and kills the wasps in the spray. The nest carries on. What you gain is an agitated colony, and you are standing on a ladder next to it. This is one of the main reasons we are called to nests that have been half-treated already.
Burning something at an entrance, or putting a smoke canister into a loft, is a fire risk around roof timbers and insulation. It does not reliably reach the colony either. We would not recommend it.
If a nest is visible in a shed or a bush, it is tempting to take it down. A disturbed nest releases defensive wasps and the ones that were out foraging will come back to find nothing there.
In March, wasp nest removal is £90, fixed and guaranteed, with no call-out fee. The cost guide covers what is included. If it returns within 14 days we come back and re-treat free.
Many March homes sit close together, on older terraces and on newer estates, so a nest that is disturbed can send wasps into the next garden as well as your own. That is one more reason to leave it alone and let a professional treat it properly in one visit.
