The comparison that actually helps. A mouse dropping is about the size of a grain of rice. A rat dropping is about the size of an olive stone. If you are having to look closely to decide, it is a mouse — rat droppings are not something you have to squint at.
Why It Changes What Happens Next
This is not an academic distinction. The two animals behave differently enough that equipment placed for one is placed wrongly for the other.
- Rats are neophobic. BPCA's word: they have a fear of new objects, so anything introduced gets avoided at first and has to be left in place long enough to be accepted
- Mice are inquisitive and nibble at many points rather than feeding steadily at one, which changes both placement and quantity
- The gaps are different. BPCA put a mouse at 5mm and a rat at 15mm, so the proofing survey is looking for different things
- The routes are different. Rats travel along established runs; mice range more widely over a smaller area
Other Signs to Read Alongside Them
- Smear marks — BPCA describe the greasy residue rats leave where they repeatedly brush a surface. More pronounced with rats than mice
- Gnawing. Coarse and destructive with rats, including cable and pipework; finer and smaller with mice
- Noise. Heavier and lower with rats, often under floors; lighter, faster and higher up with mice
- Smell. A strong musky, ammonia-like odour usually indicates a substantial mouse population in an enclosed space
- Outdoor evidence. Burrows and runs point at rats; mice are rarely first noticed outdoors
If You Are Not Sure
Photograph them next to something for scale — a coin, a pencil, a ruler — and leave them where they are until somebody has looked. Clearing them up first is the commonest thing that makes the first visit less useful than it should be, because the droppings are the map of where the activity actually runs.
Where the identification is genuinely the whole question, a pest inspection and survey is a fixed cost and settles it before you commit to a treatment.
