Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control — Saint Ives

How Can You Remove Carpet Moth Larvae From a Home in Saint Ives?

Removing carpet moth or beetle larvae from a Saint Ives home starts with telling which you have, since beetles often arrive through windows and leave different damage.

Before you remove larvae, work out which larvae they are. Carpet moth larvae and carpet beetle larvae feed on the same materials, but they look different and tend to get in by different routes, and that changes where you should look.

Telling them apart

  • Moth larvae are pale and grub-like, often in a silken case, and leave grazed patches with webbing.
  • Beetle larvae are short, brown and bristly, the so-called woolly bears, and leave small clean holes with no webbing, plus shed bristly skins.

The Natural History Museum describes beetle damage as small, clean holes without strands of silk. Webbing points to moth, and no webbing points to beetle.

Why windows matter in Saint Ives

Saint Ives has an older core and riverside streets, and many homes have a garden or open windows in summer. Adult carpet beetles feed on pollen and nectar, so they often come in from outside and are found on windowsills trying to get back out. This is why a property with no second-hand textiles can still have beetle larvae.

  1. Check the windowsills and curtains for small rounded, mottled beetles.
  2. Vacuum the sills, the floor beneath them and the curtain edges.
  3. Follow the line of the carpet along any wall with a window.
  4. Look in wardrobes for holes in wool and shed skins.
Do not rely on screens. Fly screens and a closed window reduce the number coming in, but they do nothing about larvae already feeding in the carpet or under furniture.

Clearing what is already there

The routine is the same for both. Vacuum the edges and under furniture with the crevice tool, empty the cleaner into a sealed bag, hot wash or freeze wool, and keep vacuuming regularly. Beetle larvae leave droppings and shed skins that are often easier to see than the larvae themselves, so look for those.

Wardrobes and stored textiles

Beetle larvae are not fussy and will happily eat felt, feathers and animal-hair brushes as well as wool. In an older Saint Ives house with a loft or a trunk full of old blankets, those stored items can hold a population that never touches the carpet. Open each one and look for shed skins.

Anything you find, wash hot if it tolerates it or freeze it, and then keep it sealed.

When it is time to call

Common Questions

Why do I have small holes but no webbing?
That pattern points to carpet beetle larvae rather than carpet moths. Both are treated at the same price.
Can beetles really fly in through a window?
Yes. Adult carpet beetles feed on pollen and nectar and are often found at windowsills.
What do carpet beetle larvae eat besides carpet?
The same keratin materials as moth larvae: wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather and felt.
Do I need to know the pest before calling?
No. Tell us what you can see and we will work it out when we visit.
