In older Saint Ives homes, inherited furniture and stored rugs mean plenty of wool sitting still, which is exactly what carpet moth larvae look for.
Carpet moths appear under furniture because that is where wool sits undisturbed. In houses with a long history of keeping things, such as the older streets of Saint Ives, there is often a lot of it.
A home near the riverside or in the older core of the town is likely to hold furniture and textiles that stay in one place for decades: a chest of blankets, a wool rug passed down in the family, a sideboard no one has pushed aside in years. None of these are a problem in themselves. But wool, fur, feathers and silk are food to a carpet moth larva, and a still, dark corner is the perfect dining room.
An existing population in the building can spread slowly from one wool source to another. New arrivals come in on second-hand textiles, or, with carpet beetles, through open windows from the garden. After that, the larvae feed away from view. Adult moths do not eat cloth, so the moth you see running along the skirting is a symptom rather than the cause.
That is a good start and it helps prevent a return. It is not enough where larvae are in the underlay or beneath something too heavy to move, and a Saint Ives house with built-in or inherited furniture may well have both.
We treat the feeding areas for £220 for the first room and £60 for each extra room, confirmed before booking. See the Saint Ives service page and the cost guide. Anything that returns within 14 days is treated again free.
The river does not make the problem worse, and neither does damp. What matters in Saint Ives is the same as anywhere else: wool and quiet. A well-kept house that stores a lot of textiles can be more attractive to larvae than a bare one, so cleanliness on the surface is not the whole answer.
