Carpet Moth & Carpet Beetle Control — Wisbech

Why Do Carpet Moths Often Appear Under Furniture in Wisbech Homes?

Bare patches under furniture in a Wisbech terrace or Georgian house are not always moths, so it is worth knowing what carpet moth damage actually looks like.

Carpet moths often appear under furniture because the larvae feed where they are not disturbed. But bare carpet under a chair is not automatically moth damage, so the first job is to tell the difference.

Moth Damage or Just Wear?

Wear and moth damage are easily confused, particularly in older Wisbech houses where carpets have seen many years of use. The clues are different.

  • Wear is where feet and chair legs go: doorways, stairs, in front of the settee. It is flattened and shiny rather than eaten.
  • Moth damage is grazed or thinned pile in a hidden spot, with silken webbing, fine debris or tiny cases like grains of rice.
  • Carpet beetle damage is small clean holes with no webbing, often with bristly shed skins nearby.
The test. Damage at the edges, beneath furniture and in unused rooms, with webbing or cases, is far more likely to be larvae than footfall.

Why Furniture Hides It

A Georgian townhouse near the Brink, a terrace off a side street or a farmhouse on the edge of town, all have rooms where a wardrobe or bed has sat for years. The larvae eat keratin, found in wool, silk, fur and feathers, and a wool-mix carpet, or a felt underlay below a carpet that looks synthetic, will do. The adult moths do not feed on fabric and are mostly a late sign that eggs are already down.

What to Do This Week

  1. Photograph the patch and note where it is.
  2. Move what you safely can and vacuum along the edges and underneath.
  3. Check again in a week for growth, new webbing or fresh debris.
  4. Look in cupboards and the loft for wool, feathers and dead insects.

If the patch is not spreading, it may well be wear or an old problem. If it is, something is still feeding. Shop sprays and strips rarely reach it.

If It Is Moth

We treat the areas where larvae are feeding. In Wisbech the price is £220 for the first room and £60 for every further room, confirmed before booking, with no call-out fee. Not certain what you have? A pest inspection and survey is £120. More on the Wisbech service page and in the cost guide. If it returns within 14 days, we re-treat free.

Why a Second Opinion Helps

Many Wisbech homes have carpets that were laid decades ago and have been patched or moved around. Old repairs, previous damage and wear can all look alike. We look at where the damage is, what is in the pile, and what the underlay is made of, and tell you plainly if it turns out not to be a moth problem at all. That saves you a treatment you do not need.

If you would rather talk it through, call 01223 902388 or send us a WhatsApp message with a photo of the edge of the carpet. We will tell you honestly whether it looks like moth, beetle or something else.

Common Questions

How do I tell moth damage from wear in Wisbech?
Wear sits where people walk and looks flattened. Moth damage is in hidden places, with webbing, debris or cases.
Why would a synthetic carpet be damaged?
Mixed fibres and wool or felt underlay are common. If there is damage, something in the floor is keratin.
Should I wait to see if the patch grows?
A week of watching is reasonable. If it grows or webbing appears, larvae are active.
Do adult moths eat the carpet?
No. Adults mainly mate and lay eggs. The larvae cause the damage.
