The pet has been treated and the fleas are still there. That is not a failed vet treatment — it is the difference between treating an animal and treating a property.
A flea problem is mostly not on the animal. BPCA describe fleas and their eggs as commonly found in soft furnishings that provide plenty of insulation — carpets, pet bedding, clothes and upholstered furniture.
Eggs are laid on the animal but do not stay there. They fall off wherever it walks, sleeps and lies, which means the infestation is distributed across the property rather than concentrated on the pet.
| Stage | Where it is |
|---|---|
| Egg | Falls off the animal into carpet, bedding and furnishings |
| Larva | Down in the pile, avoiding light, feeding on debris |
| Pupa | In a cocoon in the pile — the protected stage |
| Adult | On the animal, or waiting in the cocoon for a host |
BPCA sets the lifecycle out in exactly those four stages. Only the last of them spends time on the pet, which is why a veterinary treatment deals with what it can reach and the property carries on producing more.
We treat the property rather than the animal, concentrating on the floor coverings, the pet's sleeping places and the soft furnishings where the eggs and larvae actually are.
Keep the animal's veterinary treatment current alongside it — the two work together. The treatment and the cost are set out before we book you in.
Our current price is £220 first room, +£60 per additional room. There is no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed with you before anything is booked — never afterwards.
Our Flea Control cost guide explains what the price covers and what happens on the day, and every price we charge is published on the pest control price list.
Treating the pet deals with the adults on the pet. It does nothing about the eggs, larvae and cocoons already distributed through the carpet, which is why the problem carries on after the cat has been done.
