Fly Control — Ely

Which Type of Fly Is Infesting My Ely Home or Business?

A fly problem in an older house is often a clue to something hidden, so it pays to identify the fly before assuming the kitchen is at fault.

Which fly is it? In an Ely home, particularly an older terrace with cavities, a loft and original floors, the answer often tells you whether the problem is in the room or behind it. These are the five common types and what each one suggests.

The One Worth Worrying About

Blow flies are the species that most often point to a hidden problem. In a Victorian or older Ely property there are plenty of voids where a mouse or a bird can die unseen: behind a chimney breast, under floorboards, in a wall cavity. The adults find it by smell and lay eggs on it, and the maggots feed before pupating.

The clue is the speed. If large flies appear suddenly in one room, in numbers, with no food or waste to account for them, treat it as a search for a source. A smell that is sweetish and heavy supports that.

What to Check Before Calling

  1. Note which room, and whether the flies are mostly at the window.
  2. Look in the loft or any accessible void for a dead animal.
  3. Check the bin, the caddy and the recycling.
  4. Try the sticky-tape test over any drain you suspect.

You will often resolve the small flies this way. You will not resolve a carcass inside a wall without opening it up or knowing where to look, and you will not clear the larvae by spraying adults.

Terraces, Cathedral City Streets and Shared Walls

Many Ely homes are terraced, with shared walls, shared roof lines and old party-wall cavities. A fly source in the neighbouring house can show up in yours, and a roof space that runs the length of a terrace can hold flies you never see. If you suspect that, mention it when you call, because it changes where we look and who may need to give access.

Around Ely, homes close to the river may also be damp in cellars or ground floors, and damp organic matter suits some of the smaller species. It is another reason to check low-use drains and under-stairs spaces.

Our Approach

We identify the species, find the source and treat the source and the adults. Our fly control in Ely is £180 fixed, with no call-out fee, agreed before work starts and backed by a free re-treat if the problem returns within 14 days. The cost guide has the detail, and a pest inspection and survey at £120 helps where the source is unclear.

Call 01223 902388 or WhatsApp us and describe what you are seeing.

Common Questions

Why have large flies suddenly appeared in one room?
That pattern often points to blow flies and a source nearby, such as something dead in a void.
Can an old house have flies without being dirty?
Yes. Voids, lofts and drains in older buildings can hold a breeding source that has nothing to do with housekeeping.
Do blow flies bite?
No. They are a hygiene and nuisance concern rather than a biting one.
What does a pest inspection cost in Ely?
It is £120 fixed, and it identifies the pest, the extent and the access points.
