Flies gather at windows because they head for the brightest spot and cannot find the way out, but a steady stream of them usually means a source in the building.
Flies go to windows because of the light. Indoors, a fly that wants to leave flies towards the brightest surface and then keeps bumping against the glass, because it cannot work out that there is a gap somewhere else. So the window is where you see them. It is rarely where they came from.
The useful question is where they are coming from, and in an older Buckden house the answer is often above your head.
Cluster flies are large, slow and rather dozy, and they spend the winter in groups in sheltered, undisturbed spaces. A roof void or the top of a wall cavity in an older village property suits them well. They are not breeding in your house. They are resting there, and on a mild day they wake up and crawl down towards the light, which means the upstairs windows.
If the flies are glossy, noisy and appeared quite suddenly, particularly metallic blue or green ones, think blow flies. These develop in something dead, such as a bird or rodent in a loft, a chimney or a void. A fresh crop emerging at the window over several days is the clue. Small flies resting still on the wall of a bathroom are a different story again and point to a drain.
That will tell you a lot, but it will not clear a roof space full of overwintering flies, and it cannot find a hidden carcass in a cavity.
People in older Buckden houses often notice the problem in the first cold snaps, when the flies move indoors looking for somewhere dry to sit out the winter. By the time they reach the window you have probably had them for weeks without knowing. A warm afternoon in January can bring a sudden wave to the bedroom glass, which is why it feels as though they appeared overnight. They did not. They were waiting up there.
Leaving them alone tends to mean the same again next year, since the roof space stays just as attractive.
