The first thing to settle at a Wisbech window is whether the flies are drifting in from outside or being produced inside, and there is a simple way to find out.
Flies collect at windows because they are pulled towards light and cannot get past the glass. That tells you nothing about where they started. The most useful question for a Wisbech terrace, a Georgian townhouse or a house on the edge of town is whether they arrived from outside or came out of something inside.
For two or three days, watch when the flies appear. If the numbers rise when doors and windows are open and fall when they are shut, they are mostly coming in. If you find fresh flies at a closed window first thing in the morning, with every door shut all night, they are being produced inside or are resting somewhere in the building.
A property with open land or animals nearby may well draw in more flies from outside, though that is a matter of what is around your own door rather than of the town. Look at your own bins, compost and pet feeding spots first. Keep bin lids closed and bins away from the back door, and fit a fly screen or a bead curtain on the doors you use most.
Older terraces have plenty of places for a source to hide: a blocked flue, a space under a floor, a loft shared with the house next door. Check the drains with the sticky-tape test, look in the loft and listen for buzzing in a wall or ceiling that suggests something dead.
A hidden carcass or a large winter cluster is difficult to deal with without access and the right products, which is where we come in.
Even where the source is inside, cutting off the outside supply makes everything else clearer. With the doors screened and the worst gaps filled, whatever is still appearing on the sill is far more likely to be home-grown, and that makes it easier to trace. Door strips, brush seals under back doors and a mesh over an air brick are cheap measures. They are not a substitute for treatment, but they stop you fighting on two fronts.
