The bat one is the one that matters. All bat species are legally protected. If the deposits crumble to a glittery powder rather than a paste, sit in a pile beneath a single point in a roof rather than scattered along a route, and there is no gnawing anywhere at all, stop. Nothing should be treated, blocked or cleared until it has been properly advised on, and that is not caution for its own sake — disturbing a roost is a serious matter.
What a Mouse Dropping Actually Is
- Roughly 3 to 6mm long, about the size of a grain of rice
- Dark brown to black when fresh; grey and crumbly when old
- Pointed at both ends, fairly uniform
- Scattered widely and in numbers, including inside cupboards and drawers
- Accompanied by other things: gnawed packaging with small neat holes, shredded nesting material, a musky smell, light scratching after dark
The Companion Signs Are the Confirmation
This is the most useful principle. Mice do not only leave droppings — they gnaw, they nest, they smell and they make noise. Deposits with none of those alongside them are worth a second look, because a rodent leaves a set of evidence rather than a single item.
Getting an Answer Without a Visit
- Photograph them with something for scale — a coin, a pencil, a ruler. A five pence piece is 18mm across and works well.
- Photograph the surroundings too. Where they are matters as much as what they are.
- Note anything else present: gnawing, a smell, a noise, a hole, a slime trail.
- Do not handle them. There is no need, and gloves and hand-washing are the rule if you must.
