Treatment removes the mice that are there. Proofing decides whether you are doing this again next autumn — and the materials matter more than the technique.
Given BPCA's 5mm figure, proofing is not about sealing a house completely. It is about closing the routes that are actually being used, with materials that survive being gnawed.
| Material | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Wire wool packed tight, then sealed over | The standard. Rodents will not gnaw through it |
| Metal plate or mesh | Right answer for larger openings and damaged air bricks |
| Proper air brick covers | Cheap, and the correct fix |
| Metal or heavy bristle door strips | Right answer for a worn threshold |
| Expanding foam on its own | Gnawed straight through |
| Silicone or acrylic sealant on its own | A filler, not a barrier |
| Cardboard, cloth, a plastic bag | Nesting material |
Sealing a building that still has an active population inside traps them in. They will gnaw to get out, and anything that dies in an inaccessible void produces a smell you can do very little about. Proofing is the last step, not the first.
We price proofing separately at £180 for up to an hour, so it is your choice whether we do it or your own builder does. Most domestic properties are dealt with inside the hour; where more is needed we tell you what it will take before carrying on.
We treat first and proof afterwards, in that order, because sealing an active population inside a building causes a worse problem than it solves.
Proofing is priced separately so it is your choice who does it. We explain what we are using and what it costs before the work is arranged.
Our current price is £260. There is no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed with you before anything is booked — never afterwards.
Our Mice Control cost guide explains what the price covers and what happens on the day, and every price we charge is published on the pest control price list.
Foam and sealant are what most people reach for and rodents gnaw through both. Proofing that holds is metal or has metal in it, and it has to go in after the property is clear.
