Why They Are Up There

Warmth, insulation to nest in, complete quiet, and safety from everything that eats mice. A loft is harbourage rather than a feeding area, which means the animals are travelling between the roof space and a food source somewhere else — in your building, or occasionally in a neighbouring one.

They get there by climbing. Mice climb confidently, and a gap at roof level is as usable as one at the doorstep — reached from a fence, a drainpipe, a climbing plant or an overhanging branch.

What Changes About the Treatment

• Placement is on the joists and the runs, not down in the insulation where nothing will find it
• The routes are vertical. Wall cavities, service risers and pipe boxing connect a loft to the rest of the house, and the treatment has to account for that
• Access matters. Boarded lofts, low pitches and stored possessions all affect what can be reached
• Non-target considerations are different — a roof space is one of the few places where a protected species may also be present
• The smell risk is higher, because an animal that dies in insulation or a void is harder to locate

The Damage to Look For

• Gnawed cable. The one that matters, because stripped insulation on a conductor in a roof void is a fire risk you cannot see
• Insulation torn up, compacted and nested in, which has stopped performing across whatever area is affected
• Contamination across the boarded areas and the joists
• Stored possessions opened, nested in and spoiled — frequently the actual loss
• Pipework and tank insulation disturbed

Then Proofing the Roofline

This is where a loft job differs most. The gaps are at height, which means eaves, soffit and fascia joints, verges, lifted or slipped tiles, vents and old service penetrations — and often ladders or access equipment.

The cheapest and most effective single item is usually not on the building at all: cutting back the branch, the climbing plant or the fence run that gets them on to the roof in the first place.

And the Clean-Up

Once the space is confirmed clear, contaminated insulation in the affected area is usually worth replacing — it has stopped doing the job you paid for, and it is where most of the contamination sits. Damp everything down rather than disturbing it dry, and do not vacuum a loft with a domestic machine.
