First, Was the Search Good Enough?

Before concluding anything, it is worth checking the search itself against the usual gaps:

• Did you look outside as well as in? Most evidence is outdoors
• Did you look at ankle height with a torch held low? Smearing and worn runs do not show in overhead light
• Did you follow edges rather than open ground? Rats do not cross open space
• Did you part the vegetation at the boundary rather than looking at the top of it
• Did you look under the decking and at the shed base?
• Did you lift the drainage covers?
• Had you already cleaned up? Which is the commonest reason a search finds nothing

If the Search Was Sound, the Possibilities Are These

Two Things Worth Doing Anyway

1. Run a dust test. A thin layer of plain flour across a suspected route, left for two or three nights, checked with a torch held low. It confirms or rules out current traffic at a specific point better than a visual search does.
2. Proof what you found while looking. Even with no activity, the gaps you noted are worth closing — and doing it while the building is empty of rodents is far simpler than doing it afterwards.

And When to Get Somebody In

Where you have looked properly, found nothing, and are still hearing or smelling something, a pest inspection and survey is the right purchase rather than a treatment. It is a fixed cost, it covers inside and outside, and the report sets out what was found — including when the answer is nothing.

A survey that finds nothing has still done its job. It stops you buying treatments you do not need, and it points the question somewhere more useful. We would rather give you that answer than a treatment for a problem you have not got.
